Bug in USB driver on Windows SBS

Ted Mittelstaedt-5
Hi!

I attempted to load the USB driver on Windows 2008 SBS  (2008 SBS is
Small Business Server)

I keep getting the error "you already have the newest driver loaded"
when I attempt to make the server replace the APC HID driver with
apcupsd's USB driver.

I think this is something broken in the .inf file.   Windows 2008 SBS
lists as "Windows Server Standard FE" in Control Panel.  It is a 64 bit
version of Server 2008.

Adam, you (apparently) fixed this problem with Windows Server 2008 R2
(detailed in this post
https://sourceforge.net/p/apcupsd/mailman/message/26752493/ )
but you missed it in the older version.

Windows SBS 2011 uses Server 2008 R2, but SBS 2008 uses Server 2008
(no R2)

I know that Server 2008 was only out for a year before being replaced
by Server 2008 R2 but it seems like this should be an easy fix.

The SBS product line was discontinued and replaced by Windows Server
Essentials which (as far as I can tell) uses plain old Windows Server
versions.

apcupsd works fine on SBS 2008 with a serial cable so that's the
solution I'm using for now.

You have to manually select the driver - don't let Windows search for
it automatically. SBS 2008 is no different from Vista and regular
Server 2008 in this regard.

I didn't let Windows search for it automatically.  I've loaded the
USB driver on dozens of other Windows machines with no issues.  If you
really don't believe me would you believe me if I loaded up SBS 2008 in
a virtual box and filmed the error with my cell phone?  I probably have
a copy of it in my pile of old CDs somewhere.

SBS 2008 _is_ different from regular Server 2008.   In regular Server
2008 you go into System and it displays "Windows Server 2008"   In SBS
2008 you go into System and it displays "Windows Server Standard FE"
The "Fe" stands for Foundation Edition, or Fragging Evil, take your
pick.

Most people who are not Windows system admins really don't have much
understanding of Small Business Server.  Like you they think that SBS
is just another version of Windows Server.  SBS is an old product that
has been around for some time now.   The earlier versions of SBS heavily
modified the operating system to support the SBS GUI.  The later
versions used a lot of behind-the-scenes scripting and didn't mod the
OS that much.  In fact in SBS 2011 the components of SBS take the same
operating system security patches as the regular server.

If you don't want to fix the bug that's fine.  But please
don't sit there denying it exists.
